Hi People,
Not sure if this is the best place to put this, but here goes. I had a phone call from my college asking if i have or would consider training. My old tutor had said that she was looking for some help with taking courses and after looking at her class from last year she had considered me. The thought of training after just passing is bizarre to me. Do you have to have a qualification to teach massage ?
yes definetly, and I'm surprised at your tutor not knowing that.
The industry is really clamping down on tutors with no formal training, and any one that has started teaching after 2001 must have formal training. Tutors before 2001 will be able to take their experience into consideration.
You will have to register on a website (your employer will tell you what it is) and you will be given your own tutor;s reference number.
Thank you Daisy, I had not even considered Being a trainer as I'm not sure if is something i would like to do i think perhaps i shouldn't
You would need to be actively working towards a teaching qualification to work at a college as of September this year, or already have one. If you are employed by the college, they may well pay your fees. Many courses are full already and have just started, but they may be able to pull strings because they will employ you.
It is particular to therapies, but you would need up to date insurance to practice and teach and you may need to let the insurance company know.
I got roped into it, didn't see it coming, the course isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but you do learn a lot from it. I enjoy the teaching aspect of it though, nice to leave a mark.
If you are tutoring with ITEC or ABC, you can teach as soon as you qualify. For AoR, you have to have qualified at least 5 years ago and hold an AoR qualification or go through the CPS process (submitting of further case studies depending on where / with whom you qualified). For VTCT, I am unsure of the restrictions, they may well be the same as ITEC.
Hi ya Absolute
The others basically said it all. To teach in a goverment (LSC) funded college you will need a teaching qualification. Not necessary in a private college, though the examination/accrediting body will want one.
Give teaching a go, you might enjoy it and enhance your therapy career. To teach something is to learn it twice and hopefully to understand your therapy even better.
Best Wishes
