Have you every noticed some trees and how their trunks seem to twist around?
Does anybody have any idea why they do this?

At first I thought it was because of the movement of the Sun, but then it became apparent that not all trees twist in the same direction.
Even in a parkland of the same sort of tree, some of the trees were twisting in one direction and others in the other direction.

Just wondering if there is any scientific explanation for this?

RE: Trees

Hi Giles,

This may not be the correct explanation, but could the individual genetics of the tree have any bearing on the way they twist their trunks?

Love,
Patsy.

RE: Trees

I’ve wondered about this since the 70s when a dowser friend, also a PhD scientist, pointed to such a tree as we walked and said it was sited above an energy-node with underground streams crossing beneath it, a bit like being on localised ley-lines. But this cannot to date be proven and is just an hypothesis.

Find a discussion of spiral trees, with photos at:
http://www.math.utah.edu/~cherk/spiral-trees/story.html

Quote:

“The problem of the sense of optimality of a bio-structure is an example of inverse variational problems. These problems form a new type of variational problems.

“It may be postulated that morphology of a bio-structure is optimal with respect to some evolution goal, which simply means that it is best adapted to the environment.

“The question is: In what sense is the structure optimal?”

From another site, a similar hard-science view:

http://www.mun.ca/univrel/gazette/1996-97/Nov.28/m-munsol.html

"Conclusion: spiral grain is partly biomechanical engineering often accentuated by a thigmorphogenetic adaptation to strong, persistent wind. While some local environmental phenomena may apparently explain why plants have, say a right-hand spiral development, or left for that matter, there is no universal theory which adequately explains why plants development should spiral in a particular direction.

“The Gazette also heard from S. E. Bruneau via the Internet, who postulated that spiral growth rings may possible result from "wind vortex effects (vortices of all scales dominate surface wind patterns) or moon-gravity effects ('tree-tides')."

“More likely though, wrote our thoughtful reader, "Mother Nature selected the spiral trees because they would be tougher to break under snow and ice loading.”

I’m not into bonsai trees, but apparently by mimicking some of the effects of nature it’s possible to deliberately create spiral bonsais. This may or may not be relevant.

I still wonder about esoteric energetics being involved, as my dowser friend said so many years ago.

RE: Trees

Hello David,

The notion that trees grow spiral trunks in order to gain better seed dispersal and wind resistance is a good one and makes sense.

There is always a reason why things are.

Patsy.

RE: Trees

I can see the better strength thing, but that still doesn't explain why some go clockwise and some anti-clockwise.

I can't however see how it would change the seed dispersal as these come from the crown of the tree which will be static when the seeds are released. The better dispersal is caused by the height of the tree. I've got visions of trees spinning around fast now to fling their seeds outwards... hehe.

The only decent link I could find was:

http://www.science-projects.com/TreeTwist/TreeTwist.htm

but that only gives suggestions about how to go about monitoring trees to try and come to your own conclusions.

😮
