How soon do you think it will take us to reach the speed of light? There are several options available at the moment. But scientist thinks Speed of light is impossible to reach. But during the late 19th century, a scientist said & I quote. "ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO GO FASTER THAN SOUND" 100 yeats later we are going 5x the speed of sound. What are your views.

Actually, Rogue

All life on Terra were travelling faster than the speed of sound before the first Man walked upright!

Therefore long before the 19th century!

Please see this page.

Excerpt:

the Earth is rushing through space around the sun at a rate of about 29,000 m/s (66,000 mph)!

The speed of sound is only about 720mph at stp (Standard temperature and pressure).

So as long as you or I have been about, we have been travelling at

over 90 times the speed of sound.

So 5x speed of sound is no big deal!

However the speed of light is about 670 x 1,000,000 mph.

So we have to increase our speed about 100,000 times, it seems.

No need to lose much sleep over it!

Regards.

For reference... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_light

Theoretically and mathematically, science shows that the amount of energy required to accelerate an object to the speed of light tends towards infinity and therefore it would be impossible to take an object that is slower than the speed of light and accelerate it up to or past the speed of light.

Also theoretically, there are already 'particles' (most of the scientific principles work with particles as a generic term), that travel faster than the speed of light, but this means that mathematically they are travelling backwards in time, and likewise these particles would take an infinite amount of energy to slow down to the speed of light of slower than it. These theoretical particles are known as Tachyons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachyons

There's one field of thought in quantum physics (there are many) that tachyons are identical to particles on this side of the speed of light because it's just a case of switching all the signs around within the mathematical formula to give the same result. i.e. a particle travelling faster than the speed of light going backwards in time is the same particle travelling slower than the speed of light going forwards in time. 😉

Of course you then get into the realms of the theories of relativity which are far too complex to describe on a forum and are, anyway, already described sufficiently on the web if you do a search. Whether you can get your head around it is another matter. 😀

As already demonstrated we can look out our own speed of travel.
Relative to this computer I'm travelling at 0 m/s. Relative to the dark/light horizon on the earths surface (the shadow), I'm travelling at about 1,000 km/s. Relative to a fixed point in the earths orbit around the sun we're travelling far faster still (I could dig out the figures but I won't), and so on if we look at how fast the sun travels around the centre of the galaxy and the galaxy in relation to other points in space etc.

You also then have to bear in mind that science tells us, the faster we travel the slower time goes. So if you consider that an object is travelling at a certain speed (which is measured in meters per second) and then consider that this causes time to slow for that object, it has actually travelled the same distance in less than a second, which means that it has a faster speed than you initially observed. If the speed is faster then the time is even slower which makes the speed even faster and thus the time slower again and so on and so on. This is something that was defined by Lorenz and other scientists and is along the lines of the Lorenz Contraction (can't remember it's full name at the minute, I'd have to look it up at home).

How soon do you think it will take us to reach the speed of light?

Possibly it'll never happen if the scientists have got the forumula right.

There are several options available at the moment. But scientist thinks Speed of light is impossible to reach.

Which several options?

But during the late 19th century, a scientist said & I quote. "ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO GO FASTER THAN SOUND" 100 years later we are going 5x the speed of sound. What are your views.

I think (personal view) that there may the possibility of moving from one point in space to another or influencing one point of space from another without having to travel through all the points inbetween, thus giving the impression from basic calculations that we have travelled X distance in Y amount of time giving a theoretical speed greater than the speed of light, but I don't think we will actually travel at that speed.

That brings me to the next point, if we cannot travel the speed of light, the human race is doomed earth cannot substain this population indefinate. Unless scientist comes up with a formula to create artificial wormholes to take us to other areas of the universe, so the human race can populate & carry on.

Quite so!
