a friend got me hooked, looking at how many are on YouTube. The last on my list is quite something.

I thought that was the 'avowedly fake creation' you'd referred to. For one thing it's too well set up with the UFO conveniently zipping behind the mountain within shot. The set up is too slick. The more convincing faked clips have a deliberately 'amateurised' look. There are many like this on Youtube and they're very easy to produce. Good fun though.

There are far more spectacular clips - but so spectacular, one tends to think, "Surely not?"

That's what I usually think, which is about as much thought as I give them. The profusion of fake clips unfortunately diminishes the impact of the more credible sightings. Maybe it's a government conspiracy to make us all skeptics? 🙂

Nah, I came across hilariously bad stuff, but can't take time to find it again right now.

The clip you mention, last on my list, I'm just not sure about the scenery itself TBH. A bit Gerry Anderson? UFOs are often not always said to be silent, too. But who knows?

Exactly. If you look at these things for long enough they become less and less convincing. This film is purported to have been made on a hiking trip in Costa Rica. The first thing that struck me was that the panning and zoom are not characteristic of a hand-held camera filming an unexpected, fast moving object.

Take these all with a very large pinch of salt, and instead of spending the night watching them on YouTube, get some sleep. It'll be time better spent. 🙂

Take these all with a very large pinch of salt,

I'd never take them all with a large pinch of salt - I've seen a UFO myself, and know several other trustworthy people who've had quite spectacular sightings. (A music teacher was once so knocked out by one that he risked mockery by telling the whole class of a low-level glowing diamond with lights swinging around it in high speed revolutions, above him. Many other stories.) In my teens I read literally thousands of sighting-accounts, so have a good grasp of what people tend to see. Add to that how widespread video cams and mobile cameras are today, and I'd wonder how the UFO phenomenon could escape being filmed - as it's not so very rare. Then the NASA and also military footage.

Take the relative frequency of sightings, and how widespread video cameras are, and it'd more of a mystery if some were not filmed. (I'm heir to a highly-strange piece of film by a friend whom I know is honest, and we've never even bothered seeking publicity.)

Again, it can lift one out of the mundane and inspire a sense of wonder.

I'm not arguing that people haven't seen UFOs, just that you won't find the proof on Youtube.
