hi all

following many conversations on a friday night with my buddys around space, as you do.

when we talk about the ends of the universe, and space is expanding, can i ask expanding in to what, what is that void it expands in to.

thanks

brian

RE: expansion of space

Good question! A layman like me might say the space is there but the matter from the Big 'Bang' is expanding. However I believe there's theory or fact that the universe itself may be spherical, so that if you travelled in a straight line it would not in fact be straight but would curve back. I'm sure others can enlighten us.

RE: expansion of space

But saying that the universe is spherical or some other shape implies that it is not infinate in all directions and actually exists within something.

Edit: to fix typo

Ok, I’m getting waaaaay out of my league here…

But this is how I see it…

The universe is matter and not space, space is infinite…

So IMO it is not space that is expanding… The void, IMO, that you are talking about is space…

Not necessarily. That's still thinking in 3D as if the universe was a balloon with something around it. This isn't my field, but I thought I read that there are theories that the universe is spherical and that is it. I mean not just matter but space itself. Hard to grasp, I know. There will be current cosmological / astronomical thinking on this, but I don't know what it is.

Somehow along with this goes the theory that therefore if you see far enough through the cosmos, you are not seeing something in the direction in which you are actually looking, but may be seeing galaxies elsewhere such as in the opposite direction you are looking in. Because there is a limit albeit large to the size of the spatial cosmos.

Hmm, this is all just a vague recollection. I'd have to search the info out. 😉

As so often, this gets mystical. How can there be an edge or limit to the universe? Would there not be something beyond that? Vedanta would say, No, it is emptiness - not emptiness, but literally nothing, no-space.
