RE: Waky waky

Any apartment blocks in particular?

In a way, it's good because it provides housing for people without taking up too much land coverage. However, there's loads of factors to take account of, i.e. what area are they being built in, what sector of the public are they aiming them at, what land are they being built on (brown field or green belt?) etc etc. etc.

I think it's difficult to comment on them in a general sense.

Well thats sorted that out then lol. None in particular its just that as i drive around and see a nice area with nice older style houses then this concrete lump plonked in the middle somewhere, i dont see any more faciltys being errectedto accomadte people, DGPs Dentists etc. I agree with you we need more housing i guess its a catch 22. But i have this terrible vision that im tme to come they will be derilict. I do wonder about he sites that have been made into appartments only is this good for a comunity? will there be a fast turnover as people move in and move out?. I dont see it as a long term good idea. jaxxxxxxxxxx

Jax, your up and posting far too early!

I wonder if you mean the thousands of flats they are building in and around Birmingham? My question is ... who's buying them?! When my husband and I were looking at buying our first house together we couldn't afford any of them! For a two bed flat they were all out of our £130,000 budget! Mind you, we weren't that keen on them - they are all absolutely tiny! And they all have an open lounge, kitchen, diner with a very small kitchen area.

The other thing as well is how they are going to kill off the nightlife. We spend a lot of time going out around the gay village in Brum (Hirst Street). So far there are four large blocks of flats being built, one already completed with a number now occupied. Unfortunately these are all right next to the bars and clubs - within meters of them!

So whats going to happen? All the bars and clubs that have been there for years before they thought about building these flats are all of a sudden going to be subject to a whole lot of noise complaints and then have real problems when they come to renew their licenses. Its already started with an action group campaigning about it!

Its not like the nightlife wasn't there when people bought their flats.

Also who's buying them? There must have been thousands of flats built in Brum in the past 3 - 4 years, so many still appear empty but they are still being built. I just don't get what the attraction is - expensive tiny properties. I could live in one by myself, but not with anyone else.

I think, if I recall correctly,a few years back, the government stipulated to the local authorities that any new housing developements had to take into consideration local ameneties such as pub, shops, doctors & dentists, green area (where possible) etc. to ensure that suitable facilities would be available forresidents taking up those properties. This was in order to takle the problem where massive housing estates where being built, crammed with houses and no facilities, causing all the residents to have to drive to the nearest town causing congestion.

Giles it is not happening hun, th enest time your out and about take a look at the property developers they are buying individual plots i.e large houses knocking them down and replacing then with appartments, i bet that is the loop hole according to no of dwealings built?. so there once stood this nice large character house that blendid in with the surroundings now several appartments. What happens after that? Whats needed is more local authority housing, what happened to looking after those not so well off? jaxxxxxx

The housing situation is ridiculous at the moment! As I say Dean and I couldn't afford that much - we are both on excellent incomes, we had a 5% deposit and think we were *very* lucky to have found the house we did - 120k and 15mins walk from the town centre for a lovely 1901 terraced house. That was about four years ago, I feel really sorry for single people trying to buy their first home.
