hi

i was wondering could anyone help? I have had some horrid nightmares where I feel awake and feel complete terror. Although I think I am awake I cant move a single muscle I try to scream and nothing comes out.Its like something is holding me down and sometimes its like someone is in the room. Has this ever happened to anyone or does anyone know what it could mean?

Yes, I have had this a few times, and some of what you're describing at least is down to biology rather than supernatural forces!!

When you are asleep, your body paralyzes itself, to prevent you acting out all your dreams and injuring yourself (sleepwalkers occassionally lose this ability to paralize during sleep, hence their night time wanderings). However, sometimes you will wake up suddenly, and your body will still be in its paralyzed state, and no matter how hard you strain to move or scream, nothing happens, akin to the worst kind of nightmare. When this happens, the best thing you can do is try to acknowledge the situation for what it is, close your eyes and try to get back to sleep again. When you next wake up, you should find you will be able to move as normal again.

As I've said, this has happened to me several times, usually when I've been napping in the day time, and always when I've felt absolutely exhausted. One time in particular I remember was when I was a teenager still living at home with my parents. I fell asleep on my bed on a sunday afternoon after dinner, and suddenly woke up, and found myself unable to move or anything. It was terrifying because I could hear my mum and sister downstairs talking, and I knew I was awake. I closed my eyes and fell asleep again almost immediately, and when I woke up again everything was back to normal. Pretty scary at the time, though!!

Hope this helps. 🙂

thanks for that gemmeg,:)

that really seems to make sense it puts me at ease although i have had the same thing happen and i suddenly felt a cold wind go through me and to my right stood a girl and i just knew she was dead it happened immediately again another cold wind and now in front of the girl was a young boy who was also dead. I was absolutely terrified :eek:when I actually woke up I couldn't sleep for ages!! I was staying in a hotel at the time it really freaked me out but i will definitely do what you suggested thanks

Hi dreamer08

I agree with Gemmeg - it is called sleep paralysis, and often the person experiencing this will feel that there is an entity in the room with them. Google "sleep paralysis" and "night hag" for more information.
