Hello, I'm new to all this. I'm studying astrology and it looks as if there are some experienced people on this site, so maybe you can help. I recently heard someone talking about her 'soul purpose'. She said as she was ruled by Venus her soul's purpose was one of hedonism and to be as beautiful as she possibly could be. This didn't sound like much of a purpose to me, but then I'm not ruled by Venus. My chart ruler is Mercury - does this mean that Mercury defines my soul purpose? If so, how do I find out what that means? There's no point having a soul purpose if you don't know what it is! My sun is gemini, moon sagittarius, virgo rising and mercury and venus in cancer.

When you say you are ruled by Mercury do you mean your ascendant or sun sign ruler? Also which sign do you mean as you know Mercury and Venus rule two signs.
You are right, hedonism and being beautiful are not much of a soul purpose, but this may be your friends path at the moment.
The soul path for Taureans is to release personal desires and attachments. Not easy for a Taurean as they are the most physical sign of the zodiac.
The esoteric ruler of Taurus is Vulcan which brings growth through change and illumination. Vulcan breaks down the old forms.
According to the Tibetan Djwal Khul as channeled by Alice Bailey the key phrase for Taurus is "I see and when the Eye is opened, all is light." Taurus is the sign of the Bhuddha.

I've just noticed that you said you had Sun in Gemini, Virgo Rising and Moon in Sagittarius.
Virgo rising will give you a soul purpose of healing and being of service the ease in which this is achieved is indicated by the relationship between the exoteric ruler of Virgo (Mercury), which is in Cancer and the esoteric ruler (Moon) in Sagittarius. what occurs to me is the fourth house or cancer could be a double whammy here? Correct me if I'm wrong. Which house is your moon in?
The present incarnation is indicated by the Sun in Gemini and indicates how you can integrate your soul qualities by focusing on right human relationships and bridging the higher and lower aspects of mind, gemini in traditional astrology is the teacher.
These are just a few ideas for you to ponder on, I find esoteric astrology challenging to say the least but would only consider esoteric in assessing the path of the soul.

Thank you so much for replying, Binah. I haven't come across esoteric and exoteric rulers yet, so don't know what that means. I understood that the 'chart ruler' is the planet of the rising sign - so with Virgo rising and sun in gemini I have a double dose of Mercury. My moon (Sagittarius) and Mars (Capricorn) are in the 4th house (sun & mercury in 10th, venus in 11th). I feel I'm desperately searching for a new path at the moment, I feel time is running out and I really want the rest of my life to COUNT for something - that's why I thought knowing my soul purpose would help. Can you recommend any reading or other source of information? Many thanks.

Being ruled by Venus a Souls purpose could be to develop unconditional love or creativity..would I guess be a positive side to it..
I find the DK foundation really good for looking at the Souls message thru Astrological placements if you take a copy of your chart and go to www.dkfoundation.co.uk you might find it helpful
