I am not sure the term for people like me. I am not a Royalist but on the other hand I am not die a hard Republican either.

If you had asked me the other day if I was interested in the forthcoming wedding I would have said no. However, today I did watch it and liked it.

The sheer logistics of it amazed me and how they got it all right.

Having said that, I would no way go and sit on a pavement in London for days on end just to get a glimpse of the couple which could be seen just as well, if not better on TV.

What did I think of the dress....a bit disappointing. Although she looked lovely I thought the dress was very vintage looking and I thought she would wear her hair up which would take the veil up and make it look less like something just drapped over her head.

I've probably seen too many `Big Fat Gypsy Weddings`

I thought the dress was stunning in it's simplicity. She looked beautiful.

Her sister's dress was beautiful. The bridesmaids and pageboys were gorgeous too.

and as you say OB..the Logistics were spot on.

I am not pro or anti Royal..but I do think the whole affair did Britain proud today, on the World stage.

I don't know much about Kate's family, but the person that struck me at the wedding was her little brother James who gave the Bible reading. What a poised and elegant young man! Or at least that's how he came across.

I must admit to getting fed up with all the pre-wedding fuss but watched today and thought it was fantastic. I thought the dress was beautiful, very elegant and stylish. Kate looked stunning and so did her sister who looked gorgeous in her dress too. A lovely occassion and made me feel a little bit more proud to be British :). Good luck to them both.

it was beautiful. I feel I am being brainwashed from being a believer of non-class systems and the end of priviledges into a William&Kate&Diana big fan!

I watched it, just so as not to miss it rather than being really eager to see it and ended glued to the tv for most of the day yesterday. I think media know how to make a really romantic hypnotic event! had this been 50 years ago it would have been unnoticed in foreign countries but look all those foreign tourists flooding in London and crying like babies. I was close to tears myself! go figure out.

I think, it was the emotion and humility which I read in Kate and William's faces. I loved the way he looked with self restraint but deep love at her. he seems so principled and honest, but then that s me being over romantic and needing a slap in my face probably.

Also I was thinking at the effect his mother's death had on him and on this day...

Finally, Kate didn't swear obedience to him, following Diana's footsteps, hourrah, good girl!

I hear people cynically saying all this is crowd control, served to distract us from the economic depresssion.

Well I feel like replying to this:
a) thanks goodness. Shall we have to think all day every day about the things going wrong in the UK? I myself went for a DVD shopping spree after a week of Japan-nuclear catastrophic news. I needed it like I need breathing. Because we want to have a bit of fun and celebration doesn't mean we become unaware of and passive with important things.
b) well I didnt need a royal wedding to seek oblivion from daily massacres on the current tv news. like most people Ive got my own means of seeking happiness/refuge: music, crystals, some coffee and looking at nature for example.

At last I will venture, and hopefully wont irritate nor offend anyone here, that I used to be Anti-Monarchy all my life but have grown to challenge this belief. I feel the Royal family, even though they mean a lot of expenses that could be spent on the NHS for example (my guess, Ive no statistics to prove this and am too lazy to research it online sorry), are like a backbone of British society and spirit. maybe they even safeguard from extremism? big debate here. Im just trying to think, I dont claim Ive got any answers...

anyway it was brilliant, and it s succeeeded in making billion people happy yesterday!

(by the way, big gossip here, what is Victoria Beckham and some other guest doing wearing an all black outfit for a wedding? Id be offended!)

Well, as sick and tired as I was of the media harping on and on about it over the past few weeks, I was always looking forward to it. And I wasn't disappointed!

I thought the dress was absolutely spot on. Apparently she did her own make-up as well; soooo impressed with that!

I spoke to my mum late in the afternoon and she told me about what my dad did yesterday. He's been muttering and grumbling about the royal wedding for weeks. He had no intention of watching it, thought it was a waste of money, etc., etc... BUT... He got up in the morning and was so engrossed in watching it that he sat there in his pyjamas for hours, didn't get washed, brush his teeth or get dressed until it was over. LOL!

Made me feel really, really proud to be British - not something I say very often.

That looks to me like she's still wearing her wedding dress, but with a little bolero!

Fadette - I loved your post! See - the age of miracles is not over! :p

An American friend wrote this to me after seeing "The King's Speech" (and do you know, I feel that that film helped to raise the love and appreciation of our monarchy before the wedding)

I went to see The King’s Speech today. It was wonderful! I’ve never completely understood the role of a monarch. I think I do now. It’s good to have elections every 4 years as we do here. If someone becomes president that doesn’t work out too well we know we don’t have to live with it forever—especially because there is a two-term limit. But I weary of the politics.

After watching the film I could see that in England the King represented the people. The politics could and I’m sure did go on unabated. But they did not sully the thoughts of the people because they were united by their king.

I feel our Royal Family is a great blessing to this nation.

Love

Judy

thanks Principled, that s very sweet of you. I think Im romantic and was easily won by the media. however the feminist in me was happy to see that she did not swear obedience to her hubby! (however, again, the parade of Kate's dad offering her hand to William was a bit of a farcical ritual underlining the patriarchal tones of it all but I thought Lets not focus on that).

Tiger, your dad s story was so funny! It was mine too haha. Im supposed to study 5 hours a day (big exam coming on) but had to watch it eventhough Ive never watched anything about the royal family before.

I think part of the fascination comes from the realization that for once, some "important" or/and influencial people out there (celebrities, big business men and heads of state included) seem to devote their lives to doing good (or am I floating in self disillusion here?), what with William's mum legacy and inspiration, and their decision with the wedding presents to be only donations to charities.
So I dont think the billion people watching it were in love with the monarchy as per se, but more intrigued and warming to William and his chosen girl as future King and Queen.
...and they/I realize that maybe some monarchy isnt all bad, if those people are fighting for good stuff (anti GMO, organic farming, war victims etc). But maybe I want to believe what I wish for...?

in any case, I do not like it when the media talk of a monarchy that could end soon. 15 years ago Id have thought "well it s about time" thinking that this would logically bring equality and more money to the poor. However, I remember that the last king and queen to have reigned in France and to be killed by the mob, were the most peaceful (I know Louis XVI was involved in financing the America/England war; but what Im referring to here is the nature of the King towards power), shy and even introverted and power-scared monarchs France had seen in hundreds of years. I always think how sad it had to be them: a king whose passions were key making (!) and hunting (ok, not agreeing with this but all monarchs and aristocrats were into it it seems - and still are) and nothing else, and running away from social successes and superficialities. definitely the opposite of Louis XIV the "sun king". and Marie Antoinette...well, Im a big fan so I cant be objective here.

so my idea is that I hope that for once the monarchy comes close to the people, seems more interested in fighting for good causes than the war (correct me if Im wrong), it wont invite a mob who spots the opportunity of a "soft" monarchy to overthrow it and start years of inner fighting like it did in France (100 years of violence)..

Just thought I'd pop back Fadette. On my TV screen Victoria's dress was definitely navy blue and I thought how nice that it was so simple and low key.

However, I was looking at these photos of the guests just now and her it looks dark grey/black, so I can see your point, http://www.csmonitor.com/CSM-Photo-Galleries/In-Pictures/Royal-wedding-guests

The Beckham photo here is no 7. While you're going through, a fashion miss - no 3 and a hit no12! And being catty, I really think Harry and Elton should have had their hair cut! 🙁

But this article definitely says it was navy blue: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1382258/Royal-Wedding-2011-Victoria-Beckhams-hat-Philip-Treacy-ready-minutes-service.html

I really loved it from start to finish, for me it was simply flawless.
Apart from a couple of stange hats 😀 but that's okay!

Plus I had a lovely day with our children and then I had a 'sleep over' with my friends.

We had a really magic time, buffet, dinner, night out.

Very good memorable day for this commoner :rollaugh:

Hey, what is it about men that we find it hard to be taken up with such things? I was hiking at the time and never intended to watch it. I didn't feel interest. Then I realised I had missed a simply great event, and romance is alive on earth. I begged for a copy and saw some of it yesterday.

They are wonderful, just wonderful. We should all celebrate and I'm sure we do. When Charles married Diana, frankly he had not left his ex. We all know that now. But these two are genuinely, totally in love - and have also been wise in taking a long time about it. I call that wisdom.

no3, Principled, is right down ugly. she reminds me, face and style (now dirty worded Fadette is coming back!) of Cinderella's sisters. there s even a picture somewhere of that young woman and her sister (Fergie's daughters?): looking like the 2 fairytale vilains, teething at Cinderella...when I saw that pic in the newspaper yesterday while sitting at a café terrace, I almost spat out my coffee. Cinderella's sisters they are!
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_yGHvCyxYCoA/Sb8kyrdsAAI/AAAAAAAAAY8/lW47bZj-R0M/s400/Cinderella+sisters

I hope you enjoyed this :rollaugh:

no12 isnt that bad. it's bold, and I usually dont like blue clothes...but this blue is hypnotic.

Victoria's dress is dark blue you re right. my tv was showing it black. still it s too dark for a wedding. Im not sure she d have been over the moon if at her own wedding many guests had arrived wearing almost-black clothes, I simply read it as a statement. like mourning. plus i think she s self-obsessed anyway, so sorry I cant compliment her. I only wish her that this time she s got a daughter and not another addition to her clan of sons.

Sorry if this read highly superficial...
But what struck me when all the guest arrived at the Abbey was that it wasnt a wedding anymore, but a celebrities fashion competition. but of course, we all enjoyed that. how boring that would be if they all came wearing long skirts and cardigans.

Venetian! lots of men were there crying like babes, we saw them looking at the woman next to them during the wedding vows with bright eyes. Im glad you too enjoyed the ceremony even if it was the day after 🙂
