I have been suffering for the last 16? years with chronic pain, all day every day type of thing.
lower back issues and neck problems had surgeries/injections you name it I've tried it.
Anyway not so long ago I had about a week of no pain, And I could not cope I mean I was in a real state,
Feelings of being a fraud and a liar and being anxious.
When the pain returned I was almost relived I could be myself again.
Am I insane or has anyone else experienced it?

I have multiple issues going on, but now this one is the worst..

Some back story..

I had an MRI done way back in 2013 or 2014 and it showed I have degenerative disc in my lower back (i forget which disc(s).. i had been dealing with maybe 5 years prior to this of just low back issues.

I think the major contributor to all this, is slouching in my chair at work (full back height type chair etc).. work in computers so this is a big problem that i only recently have been making more of a conscious effort to correct or prevent, but i still do it.. i also try to take walks throughout the day to stretch.

The lower lumbar pain is quite bad at its worst and it too would be aggravated by sleeping, but nowhere near the degree my middle back now has been hurting in the mornings for the last 6 months or so.

Back in Oct 2017 i had another MRI done for the thorasic region, where i complained about the pain (area under shoulder blades, more mid back just above the lumbar "burning" regions that get bad on both the left and right sides).

There was a time back in say 2015 where i did try a chiro for the lower issue.. didnt help much.. then i did PT twice a week, helped slightly, they also did pressure point massaging which helped a little..

Back to the last 6 months..

Gradually over time this mid back pain in the AM has gotten worse and worse.. if i take 3 ibuprofens at night before bed i can sometimes curb the degree of pain.

I've seen a Rhumo doctor recently with no help.. I've been to two different OrthoPedic doctors (but not Osteo?).. both said there was nothing structurally wrong with me.

When the pain started in mid to upper back 6 months ago i was on my normal mattress at night.. then just after i added a memory foam 3" topper.. maybe it worsened the situation by sticking me in a bad posture in bed, unsure.

I'm basically a side sleeper.. pillow between knees, i've tried making myself straighter as i sleep and more rounded, either way its all the same..
**hurts so bad after 6 hours or more that when i breath in it catches you.. turn backward on the bed and it grabs you to the point you almost want to scream from the pain.. i

I wake up move around after about 1.5 hours its minimal but there.. ie: if you go around a bend in the car, say left bend where the left side of you pushes into the seat you can feel that pain on that left side (and right side) still there, but no where near as bad.

I recently went to see a neuro surgeon because i had arachnid cysts show up on the mri recently but he said they are nothing to worry about.. gave me muscle relaxers (didnt work).. a gel (didnt try).. and ordered a tens electrical machine (tried before didnt help much)..

In meantime for about a month i've been going to the gym 4 days a week for about 1.5 hours each day.. doing primarily a quick run on treadmill for 20 to stretch the legs then stretching on a matt, trying to do some of the PT exercises i used to do.. like back lifts.. leg lifts.. leg lifts on a ball.. deep knee bends.. then weights.. and universals that work the back like rowing machines.

The neuro also said to go see the chiro or PT.. i may seek out a good chiro.. but i still worry something else is going on, something worse than just poor posture and with only two limited MRI's.. i just dont know, maybe it is truly this and core exercise and maybe Pilates will help (though maybe pilates is too much for me right now).

*he also said to use a foam roller on the back (whole back i think), i asked if i should rotate more to the side when doing lower and he said no (which is odd i think).. but said to decompress the spine.. so i have an amazon 6" foam one coming (i had started using this at my previous gym, new one doesnt have them).

Sorry long winded but just seeking answers and it helps to know the complete picture.. maybe someone else out there has gone through this and found a solution

Thanks in advance

Hello all,

Wondering if anyone can help with some much needed advise...
Having suffered severe lower back pains for almost 5 years and diagnosed with L4/5 degenerative spondylitis which has since progressed to Spondylisthesis over 2 yrs upon recent examination following persistence of the condition even with application of highly recommended conservative treatments like Osteopathy, Acupuncture, lots and lots of Physiotherapy,Pilates, staying active by walking and even the latest technology on non invasive spinal decompression i.e.IDD therapy ( rather expensive, and not covered by UK health insurance companies) .

It’s been a very frustrating 5 years of excruciating pain!! Almost on a wheelchair now...:-((

I have recently come across the pioneering procedure being offered by MR Martin Knight of the Spine foundation, called the
Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Decompression and Foraminoplasty Procedure.

Admittedly, lots of glowing tributes to it by Mr MK himself on his website , but need some independent feedback please....Has anyone undergone this procedure with Mr MK ? If so, what was your experience pre and post surgery? Is the procedure covered by the NHS at all?Any coverage by any UK Health insurance provider? Is the procedure accredited by NICE? How much if self paying?

Many thanks in advance.

Here's the scoop...

Summary:

- 44 year old male, active - walking, hiking.

- 11/13/15 had a L5/S1 discectomy on right side to remove large and small fragment which broke off disc and was crushing sciatic nerve. (This was a ton of fun as it happened while on a business trip in India!!!)

- No pain when lying down or reclined sitting but extreme pain when walking (needed to use crutches) before the surgery.

- Surgery was a success and fragments were removed and disc cleaned up.

- Still have mild annular tear in L4/L5 with mild central disc bulge.

I have had extreme low back tightness and deep ache for 10 years. Prior to surgery I had a herniation in the L5/S1 right side which would put mild pressure on sciatic nerve and the only time I had upper butt sciatic pain was when sitting. Never had pain radiating down leg. I wear a low back brace to help with the upper butt pain now after surgery and also before the surgery.

Once disc blew apart I had pain all the way down to pinky toe and a feeling of stepping on a large object in my shoe. I say “it feels like I’m standing on a golf ball”. Doctor said two things: A: The pain in the small of my back will not go away after the surgery since it is a disc fragment we are dealing with. B: You will have nerve pain for up to 18 months as it takes that long for the nerve to heal and you had severe compression of the nerve for two weeks prior to surgery.

Here we are 14 months post-surgery and I still have nerve pain though it is not at all debilitating. I still feel like I’m walking on a golf ball ONLY when I wear shoes, not when barefoot (or just barely feel it then). Now a new thing is happening. I am getting strong leg cramps in my calf and lower hamstring muscles when I stretch in bed in the mornings or when I am laying down sometimes. Also tightness of calf and behind knee. Very odd, not sure what to think about this.

I did have an MRI w/ and w/out contrast five months after surgery and everything looks good as far as the surgery went. I went to a McKenzie based physical therapist and as expected all the stretches are backwards, i.e. no bending over, only “scorpion stile” stretches. My low back muscles are so tight that this causes them to mildly spasm and then be in pain. Ironically the muscles are not “tight” in the sense that I can touch my toes with knees locked. At this point I don’t care and stretch only forward as it is the only thing that offers some relief.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the following:

- What the heck is going on!

- Why the cramping now?

- Ideas for relieving upper butt sciatic pain which has been there for years.

- How to get relief from low back pain. Walking and hiking helps but then I’m a little tight afterwards. Standing still KILLS my low back, sitting hurts, lying down feels good.

Thanks,
Mike

I've been living with multiple bulging discs, spinal stenosis and arthritis in my spine for about four years after a traumatic injury. The first neurosurgeon didn't believe I was in pain and ordered a sciatic belt for the first six months. When that obviously didn't work he ordered physical therapy, twice. I quit going the first time because it hurt so bad, I went for about two weeks twice per week. The second round of physical therapy was ordered by his NP, another unhelpful woman. This round of PT was the worst, because not only did it hurt but the therapist made me do sit-ups and I started shaking because I was in that much pain, which made her laugh. We're not done yet. Finally I thought I would get some relief when they both decided I needed spinal decompression; after two sessions of the decompression I was actually in more pain. On my next meeting to the neurosurgeon, he was asking the routine questions and then said, "Well it's not like you're having pain down your legs" to which I responded "Um yeah I am". Then we literally got in an argument because I had told his NP about the extreme sciatic leg pain and she didn't inform him, making him think I was a liar and that's exactly what he told me. After this episode he referred me to a different neurosurgeon who immediately scheduled me for steroid/pain block injections. (He also mentioned that the notes about my leg pain were in my chart and the other neuro didnt even bother to read them!) The first injection was a miracle, I think it was a fluke actually because I had at least 50% improvement in my pain and I was mobile again! I chose to have the anesthesia and I didn't even feel them numb me. The second injection was three weeks ago and was completely different. The nurse gave me the anesthesia too late, so I felt them numb me AND I felt the needle go into my back so I could not keep still. I was in immediate pain afterwards, not the normal kind they warn you of, but a sharp stabbing pain. The nurse didn't think anything of it and I'm scheduled to see my Dr. Dec 5th to discuss more options. I also need to tell him that the Tdol and flexeril are not cutting it, but I'm scared. Now I'm back to being 19 years old with very limited mobility, I can't even walk around the block. When my family goes to the amusement parks or anywhere with excessive walking I can't go! I need this neuro to look at more aggressive treatments because I feel like I should have a life, I want to learn how to drive, get a first job, experience those things. But I can't until someone fixes me!

I just wanted to share my story and see if anyone else could relate.

My partner is suffering for the last six months lower back pain which is travelling into his legs and then his foot - he gets pins and needles, tingling in the foot and loss of feeling - we thought originally sciatica and after seeing two physios - one was actually good enough to say that as it had gone on for six months she could be doing more harm than good as sciatica would have probably gone so not wanting to do any further treatment until she knew what she was dealing with suggested he go and get his Dr to send him for an MRI scan which he is having this Sunday.

He is crippled with pain - Dr has him on 2 codeine/2 paracetemol 3-4 times per day but in reality they are not doing anything - if we go out we have a window of 90 minutes before we need to get him back home.

Six month on this problem is getting worse.

Any ideas what it could be - we're thinking now disc problem/herniated disc or similar and will he have to have an op - he really cannot cope with this pain for much longer and also how much it is affecting his life because he cannot do anything.

He had a hernia op in November which was successful and the day after the op this all started - he mentioned it to the Consultant and all he said was "it's a coincidence" - do you think anything could have happened during his hernia op to cause this.

It a back/disc op is needed - what is the recovery period?

In August 2012 I went through an L4 S1 decompression and fusion operation for Spondylolisthesis. After the operation the nerve pains in my legs and feet for the first year were truly horrific; thereafter the nerve pains reduced and were much less and easily manageable, over the last 12 months I have had night time pains / spasms in my back and after I am forced to rise from bed I have pains in my feet which are now very severe. I have attended a pain clinic - visits to them are very rare and have been of no use, I have had a further MRI scan and the surgeon there has no idea what is causing the pains and has no idea how to reduce them. I have been on a variety of painkillers ranging from tramadol to tapentadol and more besides, the only treatment I take that helps is Pregabalin.
I have mentioned Nerve Root Blocks to my doctor as yet they have not come back to me and I have no idea if this or anything else will help.
I hope this post might reach somebody who has had similar problems and might be able to help me.

Hi all,

I've had lower back pain for years. I've been to Chiropractors, Physio's, Osteopaths, Accupuncturists..... you name it, no one made any difference for longer than a week or so. The past year the pain increased to excruciating level so it was difficult to move in the morning. To cut a long boring story short (not to mention one I'm sure you've all heard before) the pain is now almost gone. I started Pilates once a week in January and ......pain has stopped! I am so happy about this.
