Please can you answer my questions to find out if there is a gap in the market for Reiki in South Wales.
1. What are your reasons for having Reiki?
2. When was the last time you had Reiki?
3. What do you like about having a Reiki treatment ?
4. Do you feel there is a need to have a Reiki practitioner in the Neath Port Talbot area?
5. How much are you willing to pay for a Reiki treatment?
6. How often would you come to have a Reiki treatment?
Many thanks
I know I'm going to be hugely unpopular now but the thing about Reiki is that everyone and their dog does it. I wouldn't be surprised if a dozen people down your road already do Reiki. Many practitioners pretend they aren't worried about it and the more the merrier but let's be honest. Lot's of competition isn't helpful, is it?
It is true Oliver, but it's also true that people are drawn to the right practitioner for them. After all think how many dentists, opticians, chiropractors, physiotherapists etc.are around - there may be several in your local area but you go to the one that you like, trust etc.
Most practitioners offer more than just Reiki they have other therapies, other strings to their bow.
Trying to work out a business opportunity for Reiki is a good idea, but I think that because of the nature of Reiki, it is often more what life wants us to do that is the deciding factor. Life can guide us, push us even, into directions that we may not have considered feasible, yet they work out just right in the end. Yes, work out the practicalities of a Reiki practice, but also listen to your intuition as well. Sometimes we need to go with what 'feels right'.
Also, however many Reiki practitioners there may be, clients will find their way to the right one for them, no matter how they make a choice, it ends up the right one.

Thank you for your message. What I find with people in my local area is that no one has heard of Reiki. How do I find if there is a gap in the market, when nobody has heard of Reiki?
Well if you're looking to do it as a business, perhaps search the internet for Reiki practitioners in your area. Most who are doing it as a business will have created themselves a website or listed themselves somewhere, and it should be relatively easy to get an idea how many are in your area.
As for whether there is a market in your area in terms of clients, bear in mind that not everyone has heard of Reiki, even though it's quite a popular complementary therapy. Like most things, those who need or want to know will know about it, but there'll always be those that don't need, want or even care about it. Only getting yourself 'out there' and making yourself known to people will give you the real answer.
... and considering that ReikiPages is a relatively new site (only been going a month or two), there's bound to be more who haven't registered themselves on there.
Well, it's changed over the years--both my interests in Reiki, and Reiki.
A decade ago, the emphasis of Reiki was largely about healing energy-work. Today the emphasis is the spiritual values promoted by Mikao Usui.
My interest in Reiki is the old-school concept of it being universal energy-work.
2. When was the last time you had Reiki?
I provide and receive attunements every day, sometimes in person, sometimes by distance.
3. What do you like about having a Reiki treatment ?
The intimacy. There is always a sharing of life experiences during treatments and attunements. Sometimes one person is only aware of the healing aspect of it, and that's always nice... but what I really enjoy is connecting to someone with whom the experience parallels the other.
4. Do you feel there is a need to have a Reiki practitioner in the Neath Port Talbot area?
I live in the U.S., so unfortunately I can't help you with that question.
5. How much are you willing to pay for a Reiki treatment?
Zero. Nada. I won't pay for treatments.
The reason for this is simple: Reiki practitioners can self-treat.
Why should I pay someone for something I can either do myself, or exchange at a Reiki share?
I won't pay for treatments, but if I liked a person well enough and if the payment terms were reasonable, I would pay for an attunement / certification workshop(s).
In addition to that, if a massage therapist has Reiki on their resume, I am less likely to hire them. I will and do pay for massage, but that results in a tangible physiological result.
Massage therapists I have gone to who have Reiki on their resume have a tendency to simply hold their hands over me and do energy-work--while that's nice, I'm not going to pay for them to stand still and provide something I get from others all the time, or can do myself.
6. How often would you come to have a Reiki treatment?
Well, I already provide and receive Reiki every day, so I guess the answer to that is 7 days a week.
The key word here is the 'niche'- something you do that is authentically you and comes from your own life experience, which others will connect to you from.
And when there isn't competition, but people don't know what your modality is and how it can help them, then having a niche helps you talk about what you do and market yourself according to how it helps, rather than what it is you actually do.
eg- helping people who are bereaved to get back into the groove and find their life-joy. Or living with chronic pain. Or people who want to connect to a sense of spirituality which isn't confined to a building. etc etc.
Usually your 'niche' (or life path!) is something you've gone through yourself.

Reiki treatment results in tangible physiological results when the Reiki treatment is carried out in accordance with the practice of Usui Reiki Ryoho as developed by Mikao Usui. I cannot comment on other forms of Reiki, but the method taught and practised by Mikao Usui was a healing method used to treat physical and organic diseases and injuries as well as mental/emotional illnesses and spiritual evolution. I cannot help but wonder if all the changes people have made to the founder's system have resulted in a diluted and less effective method of healing.

Hi Andy. The same questions run through my mind.
There's going to be another shift in the Reiki community sometime later this year when a new set of official Gendai Reiki manuals is released from Japan... That'll liven things up a bit.

You would think so, but I am not too sure. I have worked with some senior Reiki professionals in the UK with regards to Voluntary Self Regulation for Reiki, and I have to say that some Reiki people have very entrenched ideas about 'their' Reiki and are very closed to any other perspective or viewpoint, regardless of how authentic and genuine it is.
