Default Advice welcome

Hi all, Have been asked to give reflexology to a young woman(29) who was diagnosed with Bi-polar depression in the early Summer. I'm wondering if it's ok to go ahead (with caution), and if anyone has experience of treating anyone with Bi-polar condition?

The person concerned has now come off medication for a while. She is tired, lethargic, lacks any concentration and feels as though her life has fallen apart. Although tired, she has poor sleep. I did suggest that she should mention having reflexology to her GP/consultant(if she has one).
She is receiving no help or back-up at all at present, has moved back to live at her Mum's (a situation both find difficult), and just sits around all day.

Your thoughts would be most helpful.

A.T x

Hiya - Ive treated Bi-polar clients.

Obviously, you treat the whole person - but, just be aware that certain reflexes will be very tender.
There may well be a lot of emotional stuff too - be sure to explain to your client what to expect in that sense, so that she is prepared.

One of my clients, I had to work up to the full hour - do lots and lots of relaxing movement to begin with.

Remember, that her time with you is time out - its away from her parents home, which they both find difficult, so its important to make it special for her.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply Ged. Feel better about the idea now. I take the point about a shorter (and lighter) treatment at first, and as you say, lots of relaxing movements.

I will be sure to explain about the treatment possibly stirring up emotional feelings - the client doesn't have spare money for counselling (which may be very helpful) so hopefully, it will not bring up anything which I can't deal with. She is a sweet and lovely girl - who actually happens to be my daughter's best friend, and my daughter is having a struggle as she sees the changes in her.

Did you have to obtain written permission before proceeding with your clients' treatment (for Bi-polar disorder) ?
