Hi everyone - Don't know if anyone can help, but I've had what feels like an irritable bladder for 3 days. My abdomen feels tender inside, but not painful. There is no pain when I pass urine, but I can feel more of an urge to go. I've had bladder irritability on and off for years now. I've been tested in the past for cystitis but tests came back negative. (Have had cystitisa couple of times- it's much more painful than this!). I'm 33 and I keep thinking I've got symptoms of something serious, like there's some nasty tumour pressing on my bladder - hypochondriac I know! I get low back pain too, but only if I lie on my back. The pain goes away as soon as I get up. I've had this back pain for years now and it's only a problem if I lie on my back, which I try to avoid as much as possible.
Another thing - I drank loads of diet coke last week and wonder if it's the caffeine/sugar that's triggered this? I usually drink water, but hardly drank any last week. It could be dehydration. Will hopefully see a dr this week. Usually this goes away on its own, but each time I get it, it feels it'll never go away. I also sometimes get this just before a period and then it goes away as soon as the period starts, but I'm not due for 2 more weeks.
Sorry about all the details. Just wondered if anyone can help me to stop thinking I've got something awful wrong with me!! Thanks C
You could be me! Almost the exact same thing is happening with me. I've had it several times since I was a teenager and eventually it goes away. Current doctor thinks its IC, but I really don't think so. This time I did two things I'm wondering about - one was a lot of caffeine and the other was a lot of walking outside (pounding on my body). Last month after my period I had nearly two weeks that I was comfortable - thought maybe it was done, but no such luck. Sometimes, out of the blue, I have a really good day. I've noticed that sitting in my hot tub helps a little as does a small glass of wine. Weird!
Measure glass for glass of your fluid intake, also take measures of the amount you pee, yes yes you'll have to pee in a jug and yes it's a chore but you need to know if what goes in is coming out, jot both measures down don't miss anything, at the end of the day tote it all up and note difference. Do it for a week, you will know then if you need to up your fluid intake, especially before / during your monthly cycle, I have to up my intake as soon as i get that tenderness, I had hysterectomy years ago but shhhhhhhhh my ovaries don't know it yet ! Don't drink squashes or 'ade drinks as they contain citric acid and can irritate the bladders lining, instead drink boiled water with a freshly squeezed lemon or orange slices.
Just thought I would add that I too get a terribly irritable bladder but it actually comes from my back! My Sacral joint tends to move at will (even though Docs tell me it cannot!!!!) When my back is 'out' it can cause havoc with my bladder & funnily enough when my back is aligned I have no sypmtoms. It's extremely annoying and painful & can feel like cystitis.
Maybe a check up with a good Osteopath would help? Could explain why you get a bit of back pain too, it doesn't have to be 'out' by much to cause problems.

I know this is a really old post but i read it because I exactly these symptoms at the moment. It has been going on the last four months and I am now undergoing tests, including a pelvic scan. I noticed that 'my pain' as I call it, was alot worse after consuming alcohol. I feel like I need to go to the loo constantly and I also feel bloated. I do not have a urine infection and have been treated with antibiotics to no avail. I have kept an eye on my suger intake, as dont have alot of caffeine anway, but its not making a difference.
I just wondered if anyone had got to the bottom of it?
I used to have irritable bladder. Mine was not caused by spinal misalignment or sacro iliac problems. It was caused by yeast that had got in there and set up home.
At the time I had a candida problem in the gut which was causing intestinal and digestive problems, but once it was sorted the IB went too! It was a terrible time as I always felt I needed to pee and I knew where every toilet in town was located. The thing is although I felt I needed to pee, there was often practically nothing in there!
The way I sorted myself was through taking probiotic supplements and aloe vera. I also used caprylic acid for a while but it made me burp terribly. I didn't really need to use it. The process takes some time to complete as it takes a while to eradicate yeasts from the body. They can get all over the place, wherever it is warm and moist.
Yes thanks. This whole thing started from an infection and I had the worst case of thrush I had ever had! I am also suffering from bloating do have so am thinking it could all be related. If the scan is clear then I will definately be working on my diet.
Thanks for the advise
I also have an irritable bladder and suffer lower back pain. I have had lots of urine and blood tests and they can find nothing wrong. They say my lower back pain is a separate issue but it feels worse when my bladder is irritated. I find if I avoid caffine and alcohol it helps. I tried drinking lots of cranberry juice at first as I thought I may have had a urne infection but this made my back pain even worse so I now avoid acidic drinks. It was inadvertanly cured a couple of years ago when I had a cyscosopy. I think the anisthetic they spuirted into my bladder relaxed my bladder and cleaned out any irritant. I was pain free and bladder was normal for about a year, until after a wedding where I had consumed a large amount of alcohol and my bladder and back problems reappeared. I have had them ever since. If I could get my bladder back to normal, I would happily drink only water for the rest of my days.
I have had cystitis many times, and taken antibiotics for it, but in June this year it didn't go away, and all the urine tests came back negative - they had failed to grow anything = no infection.
I then had a cystoscopy and the specialist found an area of inflamed tissue in the 'trigone' area of the bladder. That would explain the almost constant discomfort i feel, that is not relieved much - if at all sometimes - by urinating. I am waiting to have a biopsy done of this area.
It does seem to get worse if i drink too much alcohol; and if I get dehydrated. I take Ibupofen for it which helps a bit.
To add to the confusion I have been having peri-menopausal symptoms of hot flushes and my period has been absent for 6 weeks after being increasingly erratic (I'm only 43 but my mother went thru the big M at 43). But I have had a negative FSH. Of course all this together makes me very worried about the possibility of cancer , and I really need to get this biopsy done.
It is sad to hear so many people suffering with this. I had problems for 5 years, then 5 years pain free. now I feel like I am back to square one, but actually I know a lot more now then I did then...
Irritable bladder or painful bladder syndrome as I was diagnosed with is made worse by Caffiene, Alcohol, acidic drinks, carbonated drinks and dehydration. When I avoided these I felt a lot better. Much better than when I was drinking sachets of cystitis relief or taking amytriptylene.
I have had a lot of stress this year and this has now left me with IBS (the type where you are very constipated) and irritable bladder. I have always had lower back problems. I have been seeing a nutritional therapist so I am now taking very strong probiotics and cranberry powder (both Biocare) as well as a very strict diet, no dairy no wheat or red meat, lots of oily fish, vegetables and brown rice.
I have been on the diet for a month and dont feel that much better, I am considering a hypnotherapist as I feel like stress is causing most of the problems!
Has anyone else been very constipated? Maybe you have IBS aswell? I think I did have IBS 5 years ago but didnt have it diagnosed as I was concentrating on the bladder.
DOnt know if any of this helps.. but if you do have an irritable bladder I would definetly recommend no alcohol, caffiene or sugar!
Hi everyone, I know that this is a realy old forum, everyone seems to have writen a few years ago, but I was hoping to get some feedback on this topic. I have had thi irritable bladder thing for the last 4 months....... I have to say that when it all first began it was SO much worse than it is now. It all started when I had an infection, took loads of antibiotics and got the worst yeast infection of my life. After that my bladder just got worse and worse until sometimes I wasnt able to pee at all and only dribbles would come out...All this time I have been hoping that it is not IC. Sometimes I think it is and sometimes I dont. The reason I dont is because I have NO pain. Also, since it first happend, it has gotten much better, to the point where I have 2 weeks sometimes of normalcy. I have been on the anti candida diet for one month tommorow. This has been the only thing that has made any difference. I figured out maby it had something to do with yeast when I woke up with a white tounge and decided to take a whole wack of probiotics (which HELPED), to my suprise. I know that sometimes these things take time to heal, and I have been doing a good job so far (no sugar, no yeast, no fruit, plain water)... my bladder I guess got really inflammed after all the infection antibiotics etc... I just want to know of there is a hope of it ever going away? Some people on here say that they have had it and it has gone away after awhile, but it does take time... Can anyone tell me how LONG it took them to heal? I have only been on thi diey a month, so I am willing to stay on it as long as I have too, as long as I am feeling better (which I am). I find I can hold more in my bladder now, and this month (after starting the diet religiously) I had those two weeks of bliss.... Should I continue to be patient? Im scared.
HI Jinny Jean
I have been going through the exact same thing.
I went on maleria tablets during a trip and came home and had the worst yeast infection that i couldnt get rid of. As well as a bladder problem that wouldnt go away for a while. My doctors kept telling me there was nothing wrong with me and all tests came back negative. I have since been to a natropath and she has put on me on an anti candida diet and vitamins which worked really well for a while. I then however ended up having a mess up with my bf and had to take the morning after pill and my bladder problems came back in full force. She says now that my liver is over worked trying to get out all the hormones and other medicines ( as well as massive stress issues) my body is now trying to recover but my bladder is irritated and i just need to wait it out. It has now been a week and a half since it started again. Its just so hard not knowing when it is going to go away... what ended up happening with you??? Im just so uncomfortable all the time, i think a huge problem with me is stress too. Anyway any reply would be helpful. Hope it has all gone well with you
You are not the only one. I am battling my IC for last 4 years, its very frustrating and confusing cuz in general I do not suffer from much pain either (Thank God) just constant need to go, urgency and frequency. Not everyone with IC has pain. Of course it could also be an overactive bladder. My uro isn´t really sure which one I have but its more likely IC.
I tried medical approach, then holistic, then combo etc. I was able to manage my symptoms for a one year but now I am having huge flare for weeks and it feels like I am back to zero. I am back on IC diet, try to be on anti candida diet but not 100%, I am taking combo of rx meds (like vesicare, atarax, elavil) and herbs like CystoProtek, IC Aloe Vera, Marshmallow root, flax oil, chamomile tea etc...hopefully somehow I can bring back my manageable state.
I so wish there would be just one kind of a pill we all could take and get better.
Hi, I have been suffering from an irritable bladder for the past 3 years and just wanted to add a little note on here in-case it's of any help to fellow sufferers:
A lot of the things people are mentioning on here - and which have also caused me problems come down to a very acidic and quite unhealthy diet. I've just started a detox this week (it's from a book called CLEAN) and pretty much everything people mention here - from getting rid of yeast, to having a less-acidic and more alkiline diet, and improving your liver function - is covered in the CLEAN book.
The only problem I have had on this detox so far is that there are a few sugary jucies and smoothies on the menu - so I'm having to work around these as the natural sugars from certain fruits seem to start a flare-up.
Other than that, having read this forum, I'm very hopeful that this 3-week detox (which includes only alkiline foods, and a number of supplements such as probiotics, milk thistle etc) might help my bladder heal itself.
If I notice a vast improvement with my bladder after I have completed the detox, I will come back in the next few weeks and let people know!!
