At last, after a couple of years in preparation, the first ever research paper comparing the effectiveness of EFT with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) for treatment of PTSD has been published - you can read the abstract here
A Controlled Comparison of the Effectiveness and Efficiency... : The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease
This is great news for the EFT community, as EMDR is recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - EMDR is very well researched and proven to be very effective for trauma, but is a rather more complex approach, much more expensive to train in and much less accessible (it cannot be used for self help as easily as EFT, it has many contra-indications and you are not allowed to train in EMDR with an accredited provider unless you are already a mental health or medical professional qualified to postgraduate level).
According to the reserch paper, the efficacy of EFT is very much comparable to that of EMDR - something that many practitioners would have guessed from their experience but this hasn't been demonstrated scientifically until now.
I use both approaches and find them both effective and often interchangeable - but EFT has been seen more of a "new age", "woo-woo" therapy by medics and psychologists until very recently - so this research is welcome news for those of us who know from our clinical practice just how effective this approach is for a wide range of issues.
