Default Discomfort in the underarm area

Hi all

I think I'm probably going to see my GP about this but I thought I would ask if anyone recognises these symptoms: for several months now (at least since last October) I have been aware of an uncomfortable feeling in my left armpit. You know what it feels like if your clothes are too tight under your arm? Well, it feels like that - but my clothes are loose. I keep wanting to pull my sleeves away from my armpit. It's not tender, not painful but it's a discomfort. I used to be aware of it only when I was relaxing on the sofa in the evening but recently I know it's there pretty much all the time (like now for instance.) I can't feel any lumps or swellings or tenderness but it bothers me. Any ideas?

With love

Hi Sunanda, it sounds to me as if it's possibly ablockage in the lymph system - I'm glad you are going to the doctor as it may be something to investigate - but it may just benefit from a lymphatic massage. However, getting a medical opinion first would be the way forward here.
Hope it's all OK,

Hi Sharon

I was hoping you'd be around! Do you know, I've been feeling intuitively that it was something to do with my lymph nodes. If it is (and I will get it confirmed by the Dr.) where would I look to find a lymphatic massage?

Love

Hi Sunanda,

Have a browse on [link=http://www.mlduk.org.uk]www.mlduk.org.uk[/link]for a lymphatic therapist.

Hope you get sorted and all is well.

regards

Thanks for that, Sue.

You know I am a bit taken aback: I just tried to book an appointment with my new GP (well with any of the doctors at the practice) and was told that to get an appointment for Monday I have to try at 8.30 on Monday morning when a 'handful of appointments are released'. The first appointment I can make is for thursday afternoon and I'm not free then. I had heard that it was sometimes difficult to book a doctor's appointment, but at my old practice there was no problem at all. Oh well, live and learn...

Love

(Sorry Sharon, that was almost a rant, wasn't it?)

Sunanda you are perfectly entitled to rant - just not on my Pollyanna thread!
I can't do better than Therapy Heaven for a link.
Gosh isn't that awful trying to get an appointment! I heard a story lately of someone who went to the surgery for an appointment and was told by the receptionist that he could only do that by phone. So, standing at the desk, he pulled out his mobile phone, rang the surgery, the receptionist he was talking to answered, and they made an appointment. Completely barmy!

When I had that response from my GP's receptionist I burst into tears and told her I had a lump and couldn't wait that long (there's a lot of cancer in my family so I was a little stressed!) - miracle of miracles, there was suddenly sympathy in her voice and I had an appointment for that evening..... I'm not one to advocate the waterworks, but if you're really bothered, just tell her you have a lump, that you're really worried about it and you'd really not have to wait that long. And if still no progress, ask to speak to the practice manager - that can also work wonders.....

Hi Sunanda,

Did you ever find out what it was that was bothering you? I have symptoms very similar, and am a bit concerned about it....

Hi Sarah
You know I'd forgotten I'd ever started this thread....and the answer is no I never did find out what it is and I still get it but perhaps not as much as before. I gave up on the doctor and more or less forgot about it, to tell the truth. It's just such a niggly little thing I found I could put up with it. Let me know if you get yours checked out.

I'd say lymph node working harder (but then, why just on one side?) or the eerie workings of nerves and muscles. you know, recently I felt a nerve pulling somewhere in my right lower abdomen, about 2 seconds later I felt a slight but sharp pain somewhere near (what feels to me) the lungs, then the right shoulder blade and then back of the neck...the pain was happy traveling north!

amazing, where nerves go and what they feel like when "annoyed", isnt it?

In your case, it could just be some nerves pulling somewhere because of posture problems.

Also reminds me: years ago I went to my GP feeling all panicky, claiming upon opening her door: "my right arm is dying!".
For 5 days it had gone more and more "dead", as in no sensation and felt so heavy. She looked and felt my back and asked me "do you like massages"?" I looked at her her face quickly, wondering what the hell she was suggesting (dont smile, if you knew the situations Ive found myself in) then she added "a muscle under your shoulder blade is simply crushing your main nerve controling your arm. go and get a massage!"
I came out with a big smile on my face, first and last time I did actually, coming out of a GP's practice!

Thanks for this, Fadette. Luckily it really doesn't bother me so much nowadays. Maybe because I've been doing regular yoga and Pilates classes and having treatments from a great chiropractor. Maybe one day I'll find out what it is!

great for you! yoga is doing wonders to me too, it should be compulsory in schools / in education since it looks to me like it's self-healing!
some osteopaths wanted to send me to some tedious sessions of "realignment" physiotherapy once, and I never went (thanks god, because I had been to some other physio before and that was boring and quite upsetting lying there trying to please the sense of symetry expected by a "doc" standing above)and..

while doing the postures (I do Iyengar yoga and other types) recently it hit m that this was in fact realignment exercises, and that no fancy modern physiotherapy school could ever better yoga at all the goodness it does.

are you still in India (or am I mistaking you with someone else?) by the way?

Hi Fadette. I know what you mean about yoga. It's a great therapy. I just wish I had practised it regularly throughout my life. Yes, I'm the 'India person' - but I can't spend as much time there as I used to. However, just yesterday after umming and ahing about whether or not I can afford to go this winter, I booked my ticket and will spend six weeks there in January and February.

wow, so lucky you are! (notice my frenglish).

Id love, really love to share the year between 2 places, I sometimes spend hours trying to sort a master plan where I would be free to live in one country for 6 months and in another for the 6 other months. As I ve got 2 pets, this is next to impossible (do you see yourself flying your cat twice a year?). Pets aside, I have just not found the cunning plan that would allow me entitlement to free healthcare in France (a big advantage to living here; as well as easy and cheap traveling to the seasides beautiful places!) while working and living elsewhere! sigh, I guess retirement might be the only time when you can drift and live the dream...

anyway, people will no doubt think "what the hell?", this has nothing to do with your "under the arm" post.

so enjoy India, I dont know what season it is where you re going, I hope it is dry and sunny.

I know it's been a while since you post this, however, I am experiencing the exact same discomfort for sometime now. I keep thinking maybe it has to do with stress but sometimes it gets to the point that I just don't know if I can take it. What if anything did you find out was the problem?...looking for help

Hi, I had intermittent pain in my left arm pit for about 8 months about 2 years ago. It used to be so bad that I would press against my arm pit with my right hand to just to try and relieve the pain. I saw two doctor's about it, and was sent to hospital for and x- ray. It came back clear. About a month on I was still getting terrible pain every- so- often, but now started to make a note of when the pain occured... I found that it always hurt when I was stressed or was talking about/ remembering something stressful!
I have been doing Reiki for a few years, so looked over all my manuals again, and it seems that when you are stressed, the pain must be expressed somehow! When I told my mum this, she admitted that she gets the same pain when she desperately needs the toilet! I also get really painful knees sometimes, which act as your bodys' shock absorbers for things that happen in life, like when you feel on 'unsteady ground'. Get it checked- out just incase, but I would also recommend making a note of how you were feeling when the pain occured. Good luck, Nic
