Default junk mail

Now I have subscribed to the `I don't want junk mail` place but of course everytime you get on someone's mailing because you have bought something off them, you get more mail. For instance, we have this year, bought a new car, but because we have bought 1, they think we might buy another...I don't think so, but get a stream literature from them.

Today the postman arrived and every piece of post was junk.

This made me think:
  • The advertiser had PAID to have the leaflet/letter printed
  • They have also PAID the post office to distribute
  • The postman is PAID
  • I fling it immediately into the recycling bin
  • The recylers are PAID to take it away
  • The council (i.e. us) PAY to get the paper disposed of
We could all save a lot of money, time and the environment if this practice was stopped.

A friend was told by her post office that she should cross through the address and write REFUSED in large letters on the envelope and put it back in the post box.

I've been doing this now for some time. At first it didn't seem to make any difference (I think sometimes because some companies already have the next couple of lots of address labels printed) but gradually the amount of junk I get has dropped so that now I hardly get any.

May be try that ..

I make sure I tick all the boxes not to received more advert from anyone I buy from. Plus when I take upon a new service, like for example British gas, I makes sure to tell them I do not wish to be further contacted with offer and specifically ask them if they are going to sell my information data or not. Also I am registered with TPS so no one is allowed to contact me by phone, if it does is clearly a scam. I really hate junk mail! Sadly I can’t stop idiots putting stuff trough my post box like the local curry shop, if I wanted to know about them I would of found out. And not to mention the Mormons, they are pest enemy number one when it comes to door ringing, no matter how much you tell hem to leave you alone they will come back. Should be a low against this people! ( sorry no offence to anyone Mormon but I can‘t deny the facts)

I really think you should try to contact by mail ( so it does not cost you a penny) or the free phone the car manufactures and tell them to stop or else…!

My hatred for junk mail is grand! lol

Agreed orangeblossom!

Such a waste of time, money and effort all round - I hate junk mail!

Jane, I do like the idea of writing refused on the envelope and posting it back. We kept getting junk mail to a relative who had died for 5 years afterwards - I used to put 'Died' and the year on the envelope and posted it back. Eventually it stopped!

Ah but has anyone stopped to think how many people are employed by these firms? If we do away with junk mail they will all be out of work. (Just playing devil's advocate; I hate it as much as the rest of you but it's interwoven in our economy now.)

While I have been registered with the TPS for a while now, I loathe the junk mail that is issued with no address on it- even more when two of the same come through the letterbox at once!!

I have recently bought a desktop paper shredder.

I shred up junk mail and odd magazines. It makes great bedding for my chickens, then I dont need as much straw.

They must be happy with it because I have had six new girls for a couple of months, rescued from battery and needed to settle in, weren't laying for a while, but they are rolling eggs out now in their new nest boxes, even in the icy weather.

It's very therapeutic shredding the paper.

I only buy the TV paper at Christmas....and that shredded was the equivalent of a plastic carrier bag full.

When chucks are cleaned out poop and paper goes on the garden....
win win all round really

The way I deal with probably 99% of the junk mail I get :-

Most of my stuff I open because they are usually wanting me to subscribe to something. Therefore, MOST of the time there are pre paid envelopes for you to send the said forms back to them. ) ) ) )
I put ALL THEIR junk back into THEIR pre-paid envelope plus extra junk from the ones that dont include a pre-paid envelope and send it off to them.

I dont get much now but I still like sending it back to them when I can.

My philosophy is - If you cant beat em you may as well join em!!!!
And im still keeping the postman in business to boot )

Junk mail is a total pain, but there must be some idiots who respond to it to make it worthwhile to the companies who invest in it.

You can remove yourself from Royal Mail's lists by sending your address details to http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/c...mediaId=500081

You can get yourself on a Mail Preference List to remove yourself from marketing lists here: http://www.mpsonline.org.uk

Easy...

Okeydokey, now proved and tested:

I write with red pen REFUSED and RETURN TO SENDER on the junk mail I don’t and then I put it in the post office box … and omg they never bothered me again. I love this!!

I tend to say, 'return to sender - unknown' initially I thought this isnt working, but gradually the mail reduced and we dont get much at all.

For the persistant mail shots/envelopes, I usualy say 'RIP' please do not send anymore, with a big arrow to the address, this seems to work very well

One of our friend does a cheeky thing with the spam post, all he does is, opens the post, uses the prepaid envelope provided and then puts junk from another envelope in it, works charm !!!

I just send it all back with 'no longer at this address. return to sender'.

Seems to work, they get the message soon enough!

Several good suggestions here.

Love the ones about using the prepaid envelopes back to them - think will start trying that one.

Now if only could so a similar thing with spam emails.

Default What a waste!

I totally agree. Junk mail is a complete waste of the Earth's finite resources. I've joined the mail preference service where you can opt out of receiving junk mail - however you do have to be extra careful when you order stuff off the internet etc that you make sure you are not signed up to mailing lists. What annoys me more is that these companies make a fortune selling our personal details on to others....
