Default counselling placements

Hi there

Does anyone know where I can look for counselling placements online? I have tried the BACP but I need to be a member! Which I cant be yet because I am not yet qualified!

Unless you are thinking of moving away I would investigate your local area for placements. Find out where there are opportunities, try hospitals, care homes, gp surgerys as well as therapy rooms.

Hi, has the college or your place of learning not got a list? They usually do.

Unfortunately if you want to be a counsellor you need to join BACP anyway. The course tutors will know where previous students have obtained placements- if they don't know, then frankly you're on the wrong course. When I did my Diploma in counselling, myself and other students got placements in GP surgeries, secondary schools, an Art College, and the local MIND day centre. Also try Do-it - Volunteering made easy, they advertise counselling voluntary jobs.

Yes they do, at the time I didnt know, but yes they do have a list. However I was very fortunate to get an internal placement, with the organisation I train with. Yay!

I think you are misinformed swhypno. You dont have to join the BACP. There are other organisations out there I can join. BPC being one of them.

By the way, I had to re register. I was unable to log in with old name.

Default Placements

Placements are hard to get - harder in some areas than others. Google for the sort of thing you'd like to work with: for example, "Bereavement counselling in XXX" and see which agencies come up, then check out their web pages.

At this time of year, I get a couple of enquiries a week for placements, despite the fact that I make it clear on my website that I can't presently offer student placements. I don't mind people calling, but it does show they haven't dome even basic research. If you check out their site ypu can pull off stuff that you can mention in the initial contact (eg, "I saw on your website that you offer free counselling for XXX in XXX and I wondered if you have any student placements coming up"). It shows you've put more effort in than most and may get you an interview.

You could also contact local GP practices, They don't advertise but many will consider offering a placement - ask for the practice manager.
