TDP Lamp

just got a TDP lamp today for clinic.

As usual the chinese manual is vague. does any one have any advice on best way to use when in conjunction with needles.

I did do a TDP training course, but never got around to buy one. We must discuss this at the next meeting later this month. Have you tried to get insurance for it?

insurance! shhh!

i will contact insurers tomorrow, i'm insured for moxibustion, and the lamp is far safer than that. had a go myself today and used on my dad with BL23 & BL25 needled....its like sunshine!

mmmm... could do with one now... thinking about buying one too...the good thing is that you can cover a much broader area than moxa and it is good for people that can't take the smell too...

I never leave it on more than 10 mins on each area...I just ask the patient when they feel nice and warm...look out for the skin to get a nice red coulour and just touch it!!

According to the model...some of them take ages to heat up so I would switch it on before doing the needling and also some only work when the timer in on and you might have to reset it every half an hour...

although not as direct as moxa, it is far safer and you can use it on yourself.

i will have to do a short clinic trail to see the results.

RP..... you mentioned a course you did, was it beneficial and where did you do it?
I would expect the insurers would approve.

1- you would need a course to use a heat lamp
2- you would need to ask your insurer

You are both training in Chinese medicine (if I am not wrong)...so surely you should be able to use one once you qualify?

Already qualified in Chinese medicine

A course is not needed, just a thought!

Need to ask the insurer, as it generates heat.

As for the use, i am sold completely! used it already in clinic with great results! a very worthy addition to bodyworking, worth every penny

Insurer's say this:

1.Must be 35cm or more from body.

2.Must be checked every 5 minutes.

3.Not allowed to use on face or sides of neck.

4.Not to apply when oils or lotions have been applied to skin.

Always best to check eh!

Hi Chris did you get my email? Did you have to pay an extra premium?

I have been told the basically the same thing by my insurers. There are especially worried about the neck and face.

People should check carefully with their insurers. For example a typical CAM insurer will cover the therapist for sport injuries, but will that cover full time professional athletes?

When I studied in China I found that TDP lamps were used extensively. The idea is that acupuncture works better when the area is warm - I suppose because it stimulates Qi flow.

The doctors I studied with would even use it for Yin deficiency and other conditions where you would be careful to use moxa.

I have one at home, and use it for muscular stiffness (often alongside tui na) which is very effective.

Also good as an alternative to moxa, for instance on the Dan Tien area.
